I'mma read Twilight

Okay, here's a thing: I'm gonna get the Twilight books, and I'm going to read the crap out of them.

Sooo... they're about AppleFlowerRibbonChess?

Some of you might be wondering, "Why, Tony?! We love you! You don't have to do this!" And you're right to wonder, but fear not: I'm doing this for you. Here's my response to your appropriately worried (and possibly imaginary) outbursts regarding my well-being:

"Chill out, guys. I got this; I'm Tony MacKenzie."

No worries.

And that's all you really need. Trust me.

Now, as to why I'm doing this, I'll tell you: because I hate the movies. So, so much. When I tell TwiHards (the chosen monicker for a Twilight enthusiast) how much I hate the movies, they tell me that "The books are better".

I CALL SHENANIGANS.

So what I propose to do is thus: I'm gonna read the books and blog about what I'm reading. I will empty my mind of all prejudices (except for the stupid sparkling, I will never forgive the stupid sparkling vampires no matter what anyone gives or promises me) and try to take a look at what I'm reading, then distill it immediately into bite-sized chunks of Vitamin T-flavored Twilighty goodness (or badness, depending on how I feel about what I've just digested).

It will probably be a separate blog, so you can read it if you want, or don't if you don't. I'm thinking "One Man's Journey Through Twilight (A Supplement of Vitamin T)". What I'm asking from you, dear readers, is how I should divide my blogged regurgitations: Crazy in depth, chapter-by-chapter breakdowns?; less in depth 5-chapter chunks?; milestone moments? Or should I scrap the whole idea for the sake of the Internet?

Your butts. Hold on to them.

Or your effeminate vampires. You can hold them too.

Lemme know.

  1. Once you get through the first couple chapters, you can fly through the first book. So an overview of Twilight in its entirety would be sufficient.

There is no excuse for the poor writing in New Moon and I think that you will see where it is obvious to split it up... but it is a terrible read.

The third book, Eclipse, is my favorite. I do not know how you would split it up other than pre-battle, battle, post-battle. You'll see.

Breaking Dawn. The first section is great. The section entitled "Jacob" sucks so much, like I can't even begin to describe how awful it is. When I re-read the books (as I often do with series I love) I always skip the Jacob section. I don't know if the book has been spoiled for you or not so after I will just say it all goes downhill after the baby. The ending is so terrible. Like it really should end with the wedding and they live happily ever after, blah, blah blah

You are the first [straight] guy I have known who has decided to venture into the sparkling vampire world that is twilight. I am one of the "TwiHards" but not to the extreme. So other than what I have said above there are some things to keep in mind when reading -

    1) Stephanie Meyer was not a writer, she had a dream about the characters and turned the dream into a series. The poor writing should be blamed on her editor for letting it be published as is.

    2) Some parts of the books are corny. I have no problem admitting that. But you have to look at the underlying concepts and themes in the book. So many girls like the series because they can identify with Bella throughout the books.

    3) I also willingly admit that the sparkling is so SO stupid. Anything would have been better than sparkling. :)

Good luck. I look forward to reading your review.

  2. Okay, awesome. FEEDBACK! Love it.

Thanks, Becca. I'm going into this... not exactly blind, I know what happens in the series, but I honestly don't pick up on what people say they like about it through the movies: the romance in the story. Either they completely missed that in the movies, or they got it completely right and there isn't any to portray on film. This is me trying to understand.

Once they're read, I can either nod and say "Got it, I know what you're saying" or I can go into arguments fully armed with numbered lists of "this is why these books suck and this story is terrible", even though I probably won't because I love some stuff that I know is stupid and I love it anyway. We'll see how it goes. Also, here's the link to where those reviews will be:

I'll get started on it as soon as I make a book cover so I can read it in public without fear of ostracizing.
